Kenton’s Lesson Studio is my teaching practice. Lessons are available in Nanaimo, Port Alberni, online, and, on a limited basis, at students’ homes. Whether you want to prepare for university auditions, strengthen your technique, explore improvisation, develop your voice, write original music or arrangements, or you’re a complete beginner, I’ll meet you where you are and thoughtfully help you grow from there. Your lessons will be tailored to your individual interests and learning style.

I hold a Bachelor of Music with a double major in Performance and Jazz Composition, as well as a minor in Conducting from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. I also received CRLA’s International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC Level 2) while working as a tutor in Berklee’s Core-Music Tutor program.

I teach piano, saxophone, flute, voice (emphasizing movable-doe solfège for ear training), composition, arranging in a wide range of styles, and conducting basics.

Students are welcome to share recordings or ask questions by email or text between lessons. For piano students, I may also record short videos during lessons so you can easily reference the keyboard while practising at home.

Where? How often?

Lessons are available in person, online, and, on a limited basis, at students’ homes (for example, I currently teach a vibraphonist in their home because their instrument isn’t practical to transport).

I generally recommend weekly lessons, as they provide the most consistent progress and help reinforce what you learn between sessions. I also offer biweekly lessons and one-off lessons for students who want to focus on a specific skill, prepare for an audition or performance, or get help with a particular task.

In-person lessons are available in Nanaimo Monday through Wednesday (with the occasional weekend reschedule) and in Port Alberni on Fridays.
