Voice Lessons

Kenton offers voice lessons for students ages 8 and up, in Nanaimo, B.C. Lessons focus on technique, tone, and musicality, while helping singers build confidence in performance. Whether you’re a first-time singer, an experienced chorister, or an aspiring jazz vocalist, Kenton’s experience directing a queer, non-auditioned choir makes them especially skilled at supporting singers in a welcoming, encouraging environment.

Studio Environment

Lessons take place in a comfortable, welcoming studio space. The atmosphere is relaxed and encouraging, helping students feel confident as they develop their musicianship. Online students receive clear camera angles, shared lesson notes, and digital resources to support effective learning from home.

What You’ll Learn:

Students receive a balanced, comprehensive musical foundation, with an approach that adapts to individual interests. Lessons may include:

Technique & Musicianship

  • Posture, tone production, breathing

  • Sight-singing

  • Rhythm integration and ear training

  • Melody, phrasing, and embellishments

Repertoire & Creativity

  • Jazz, improvisation/scatting, contemporary approaches)

  • Piano for vocalists

  • Composition and Songwriting

Lesson Structure & Format

Lessons are designed to be flexible, accessible, and enjoyable.

  • Lesson lengths: 30 minutes ($40), 45 minutes ($60) or 60 minutes ($75)

  • In-person lessons in Nanaimo

  • Online lessons available for students outside the area (via Google Meet — no membership required)

  • Frequency: Weekly recommended; biweekly scheduling may be accommodated on a limited basis

  • Teaching approach: Supportive, goal-based, and adaptable to each student’s learning style

  • Materials: Method books, repertoire collections, lead sheets, creative exercises, and personalized/custom resources.
