Founded in 2026, Love is Love (LiL) Choir is based in Nanaimo, and we welcome members from across the central Vancouver Island region. Our yearly season takes place from September to May with weekly Saturday afternoon rehearsals, a year-end concert, as well as other performances and events throughout the year.

Along with the practice of singing together, LiL Choir is an educational environment where you will learn how to read music, ear training and more. Our repertoire is focused on queer composers and songwriters throughout history, as well as original music from our director.

We are first and foremost focused on creating a safer space for queer and trans folks, including people who are exploring or questioning their identities. At this time, we are not accepting allies as singing members, but we are deeply appreciative of outside support and allyship.

Land acknowledgement

Our land acknowledgement is a collaborative effort by LiL Choir, and is intended to be a call to action as well as a reminder of responsibility to the original caretakers and owners of the lands, rather than simply an acknowledgement of historical wrongdoing.

Love is Love (LiL) Choir acknowledges that we are located on the unceded lands of the Snuneymuxw Coast Salish people in the city known by its anglicized name, “Nanaimo” (an adaption and corruption of the name, “Snuneymuxw”) in the province known by its purely colonial name, “British Columbia.”

This land was never freely given or surrendered. It was stolen as borders, laws, and ownership were imposed by colonial powers. These systems of power sought to erase Indigenous peoples, their kinship systems, cultures, languages, and enduring relationships with the land. The impacts of these systems continue today.

Their impact continues to shape whose homes are safe, whose communities thrive, and whose voices are heard. The fight for Indigenous life and sovereignty is ongoing.

Settlers, immigrants, and visitors carry the responsibility to learn about and support Indigenous-led efforts for land, culture, and self-determination, to support and push for reconciliation, and to challenge systemic racism and discrimination on Turtle Island and in our country of colonial origin, Canada.
